Telescopes around the world

In addition to its own “house” telescope (in) Effelsberg, the Institute uses a number of telescopes around the world for its radio astronomical research assignments.

Effelsberg 100-meter-Radiotelescope

In operation since 1972, the telescope remains one of the most technologically advanced radio telescopes worldwide thanks to the continuous developments and upgrades from the telescope.

VLBI and EVN

The MPIfR is part of a global network of telescopes for radio interferometry (VLBI). The EVN (European VLBI Network) is the European network for radio interferometry.

Heinrich-Hertz-Telescope

In cooperation with the Steward Observatory at the University of Arizona, the MPIfR erected a 10-m-radiotelescope for the sub-millimetre-wavelength range.

APEX - Atacama Pathfinder Experiment

The Atacama Pathfinder Experiment is a sub-millimetre-telescope erected in the Atacama Desert in Chile at more than 5000-m height. The 12-metre-radiotelescope was constructed at Llano de Chajnantor, an ideal site for sub-millimetre observations.
