Student Selection and Program Admission

The coming application deadline is November 15, 2010

TOEFL Code Number 5356

The IMPRS is open to students from all countries.

Applicants must have (or are about to obtain) a degree equivalent to the German Physics Diploma (e.g., a Master of Science degree including a Master Thesis) to obtain a Ph.D. (Dr. rer. nat.) from the University of Bonn or Cologne. Applications are encouraged even if the degree will not be awarded before the application deadline.

Applicants are selected based on their excellence as proven by their University record, letters of recommendation and their scientific interests. A selection committee composed of members from all participating institutes will review the applications. Promising candidates may be invited to an interview.

Candidates whose native language is not English must provide a certificate of proficiency in English (TOEFL or equivalent).

Usually, a B.Sc. is not considered equivalent to a German Physics Diploma. Students with a bachelor degree (B.Sc.) can apply for a qualifying program at the International Graduate School in Physics and Astronomy of the University of Bonn, leading to admission to Ph.D. studies. The students have to pass an oral physics exam (in English) and submit a diploma thesis to the university. The research done in the framework of the diploma thesis can be part of the graduate research.

Enrolling in a Doctoral Program

Participating students are expected to enroll in a doctoral program either at the University of Bonn or at the University of Cologne. Requirements for the promotion (Dr. rer. nat.) at both Universities are:
  • diploma in physics or equivalent university degree
  • enrollment for at least two terms
  • a completed and accepted Ph.D. thesis (dissertation)
  • oral exam in the major and a minor subject
The complete text in German can be found in the "Promotionsordnung" (in German) at the downloads section below.

Degree Requirements

The Ph.D. thesis has to be written in English or German. Students are expected to give a seminar talk once a year and to publish a minimum of two papers during their Ph.D. period. At the partner universities the Ph.D. will be granted according to its standard rules.

PhD Positions

A number of PhD positions is available. Successful applicants with a degree equivalent to the German diploma will receive a contract (TVöD) with social security and inclusion in the public health system during the first year, followed by a tax-free fellowship in the second and third year. There is no possibility of funding beyond the three-year period.

Support is available also by the DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) for bi-national Ph.D. projects.

For more information about this program, see http://www.daad.de, at "Ausschreibungen und neue Programme"

Application Procedure

In general, students will participate in the school for two years (extension for 1 additional year is possible in special cases). It is also possible to attend the school for a shorter period within a graduation project.

It is possible to apply at any time to become member of the school.

The deadline for the last special call for applications was 15 November 2009 (start in 2010). See the poster of the call below.

You can find a list of the available PhD projects below. Please address your preferred projects in your application.

A complete application must include:
  • a complete and signed application form (see below)
  • a curriculum vitae
  • three letters of recommendation, mailed directly by the referees to the IMPRS Secretariat
